PRO-ACTIVIST, Lynne Twist

By her own definition Lynne Twist is a pro-activist.
She sees herself as someone who is working FOR something rather than AGAINST.

And, she asks a very powerful question:  “What is it that we are working for?”
“What is it that we each want and are willing to put our resources and energy into creating in this world?”

For more than 40 years, Lynne has been a recognized global visionary committed to alleviating poverty and hunger and supporting social justice and environmental sustainability.

This might feel a bit overwhelming for the rest of us on the ground, but Lynne’s work is to inspire us all to transform our relationships with each other and with the world in which we live.

So what has she done?

it’s 3:23 in the morning
and I’m awake
because my great great grandchildren
won’t let me sleep
my great great grandchildren
ask me in dreams
what did you do while the planet was plundered?
what did you do when the earth was unraveling?

surely you did something
when the seasons started failing?

as the mammals, reptiles, birds were all dying?
did you fill the streets with protest
when democracy was stolen?

what did you do
once
you
knew?

Inspiring Activism

Activists use their resources to create a more thriving & just world – my definition.  Here are three activists that are doing just that.
Edwin Chota was a Peruvian activist who campaigned against illegal logging in the Amazon, along with three of his colleagues.  Most unfortunately they were all shot and killed in a remote corner of the rainforest in the Peruvian region of Ucayali.
Chota is being hailed as an “environmental hero” and his work is honored by the Alexander Soros Foundation, in early December to coincide with the beginning of the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Peru.
Alexander Soros founded his own foundation, set up to promote social justice and human rights; his focus is on "progressive causes that might not have widespread support."  He kicked off the foundation’s efforts with a gala in support of Global Witness, the organization that previously unveiled Africa’s blood diamond scandal.

Stunned, Furious & Outraged by Geoff Ainscow

"On Monday, Dec 14th 2012, driving home from the airport I turned on the car radio to learn that twenty, 6 year old children had been murdered in their school class room in Newtown, Connecticut. I was stunned, furious, and outraged. By the time I arrived home, I’d decided I could no longer keep quiet about the insane gun culture in this country.

How do people get a Bushmaster Semi-automatic assault weapon? I looked on the web and found 8 places that sell weapons in Sunnyvale, my own town.  Six were located in private homes with licenses to sell guns and ammunition.

Finding my voice in prison by Marjorie Jones

After 20+ years of teaching, it is a remarkable experience to find your true teaching voice inside a maximum-security prison!  Yet at Sing Sing prison in NY and at Graterford in PA, where currently I am teaching history for Villanova University, my experience has been reaffirmed over and over again.  Both Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY, and Villanova offer (privately funded) degree programs to the men in both prisons.  Consistently the men in these highly selective programs are talented, dedicated and appreciative.
