BE A GAME CHANGER

4/30/2015

I have just finished the Game Changer Intensive – an online 7-week course designed by The Pachamama Alliance to educate, inspire and provide the skills for folks to become “pro-activist” leaders.

As an Elder-Activist I share similar goals; and, I give the Game Changer Intensive 5 stars!
Why?  it works!  Because Erv, another participant wrote to me:
This GCI has changed me. I am now an activist.  I was not before this GCI. I was concerned, yes, but an activist?  No.

I signed the Movetoamend.org petition this morning.  I am going to be in Washington D.C. this September with a group of grandparents and other elders who are going to speak up and lobby our representatives about the need for action on the issue of climate.

All the material we have read and viewed has spoken to me very deeply.  I am very grateful for this experience. My friends and acquaintances know what I am doing.  They are changing slowly—their awareness is growing just like mine has.

My Friend Neil's Optimism

4/29/2015

Neil is a regular kind of a guy -- whose business is marketing.  We met at 350.org meetings, here in Philadelphia -- and, in spite of all the drama and pessimism he is optimistic.  Read more in YOUR STORIES.

I’ve attended a lot of meetings with environmental groups. What strikes me is the pessimism and victim mentality about climate change: “It’s too late, we don’t have enough money, we’re losing the p.r. battle.”

From the perspective of my life experience, I respond:  “So what?”
  • When I was a kid, there were neighborhoods we couldn’t move into because we were Jewish. My father, who graduated at the top of his class, couldn’t get a job at most accounting firms for the same reason.
  • People were scared to death of homosexuals, who they thought were perverts and child molesters.

GROUNDED OPTIMISM

Too often we sink into despair about the state of our world.
This happens most frequently to me after reading the paper or listening to the news.
So, I am inviting us to explore what “grounded optimism” might look like.

A few words of inspiration from Maya Angelou:
Hope and Fear cannot occupy the same space
at the same time.
Invite one to stay.

And a bit of wisdom, courtesy of Thomas Berry, a Catholic priest and cultural historian:
If the dynamics of the Universe from the beginning shaped the course of the Heavens, lighted the Sun, and formed the Earth, if this same dynamism brought forth the continents and seas and atmosphere …..and, finally brought us into being and guided us safely through the turbulent centuries, there is reason to believe that this same guiding process is precisely what has awakened in us our present understanding of ourselves and our relation to this stupendous process. Sensitized to such guidance from the very structure and functioning of the Universe, we can have confidence in the future that awaits the human venture.
