The PAPAL ENCYCLICAL -- another perspective

6/30/2015

Pope Francis has courageously demonstrated and shared his deep connection with all life in his recent Encyclical; which will have far reaching impact across our world.
Mary Evelyn Tucker, from the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology provides an excellent assessment of this encyclical – “On Care For Our Common Home.” As a blog, it is a bit long, but well worth reading.            Lynne

Climate Change Brings Moral Change
By Mary Evelyn Tucker

Pope Francis is clearly one of the most popular people on the planet at present. With his love for the poor, his willingness to embrace the outcaste, and his genuine humility he has captured the hearts of millions - Christian and non-Christian alike. He has inspired minds as well by his willingness to take on difficult issues such as ecology, economy, and equity, which he sees as inextricably linked. Indeed, these three interwoven issues are at the heart of his Papal encyclical released this week. An encyclical is a letter to the Bishops and all Church members. It is the highest level of teaching in the Catholic Church and this is the first encyclical on the environment in the history of the Church.

First, he addresses ecology.

RADICAL JOY - RADICAL BEAUTY

There are so many ways to be an activist.  Rev. Alison Cornish shares her thoughts on how creating beauty out of what might be “wounded” is a radical act that bring joy and a full heart.   People all over the world go to wounded places they care about to share their stories, discover life and resilience there, and make a wild, bold, collaborative act of beauty as a gift to the place for all it has given to humans.   --  Lynne

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. --  Roman, 3rd century BCE

Beauty is before me, and beauty behind me, above me and below me hovers the beautiful. I am surrounded by it.  I am immersed in it. In my youth, I am aware of it, and, in old age, I shall walk quietly the beautiful trail.  In beauty it is begun. In beauty, it is ended.  --  From the Navajo Indians, N. America

I have been thinking a lot about beauty lately.  What it is, and how we decide?  Do we, in fact, decide at all, or are our tastes and ideas of what is beautiful so reflexive that our eyes and minds apply labels before we even have a chance to think?

Recently I’ve been thinking that maybe ‘beauty’ is too loaded a word, a concept, and have instead experimented with the idea of seeing gifts rather than categorizing things as beautiful – or not.  For example, last week I was riding the train through a particularly graffiti-heavy corridor north of Philadelphia.  My ‘beauty’ gauge kicked in quickly, and I started feeling the annoyance and sadness when I see buildings, walls and boxcars covered with tags, names and images that are mysterious to me in their meaning.

AMELIA BOYNTON ROBINSON - SACRED ACTIVISM

I gazed into the face of Amelia Boynton Robinson, an icon of the Civil Rights era, and felt her focus and strength gazing back at me -- in spite of the fact that she was 103 years of age and sitting in a wheelchair.

She held my hand and gave me her blessing, telling me to “always trust and believe in God” – that “God would watch over me.”

I am confident that I have a very different concept of God than Ms. Robinson; but that did not lessen the depth of her blessing for me.  I felt her calling me to believe in God – to believe in what is just, in what is good, and in what is loving.
