The March is the Message

We are less than one week away from the People’s Climate March. Folks in California will board the “Peace Train” Tuesday morning. In Philadelphia there are no more buses available to rent.

“WE THE ELDERS” will be marching in the second themed area:  We Can Build The Future, along with families, students, labor & health care workers.

It is happening.
And, you can be a part of this historic moment.

Join us in New York City.
Or, join us via the Global Mobilization.

Either way the March is the Message.
It is a message to the world leaders who will be gathering at the UN Climate Summit on September 23rd, at the invitation of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The invitation to this Summit states that: “Climate change is not a far-off problem. It is happening now and is having very real consequences on people’s lives. Climate change is disrupting national economies, costing us dearly today and even more tomorrow.  But there is a growing recognition that affordable, scalable solutions are available now that will enable us all to leapfrog to cleaner, more resilient economies.”

This is the critical time
Now is the time for our world leaders to come together, and put in place strong policies and actions that will turn the tide on our energy usage, and the way that we treat our world.

Our planet is not simply a warehouse to provide us with needed resources – but the living organism that sustains all life in a carefully balanced ecosystem.

This is also a message with hope.
There are affordable and feasible solutions to the climate crises.

What we need is the will and the leadership.  Thankfully the UN Climate Summit is a call to action – not only to world leaders but also to the world’s people.

The strength of our March -- the People’s Climate March -- will be a call to world leaders to pay attention to the message of the people.  We, the people, are actively organizing, expecting and demanding that our leaders will responsibly serve us.

Every major transformation has had strong leadership supported by a vocal public.  Now, is the moment to get behind our leaders and empower them to do their job.

Our power is hundreds of thousands of people speaking with one voice saying: “Now is the moment for real action.   By marching together we empower our leaders so that the people and the leaders can bring forth the thriving, resilient communities that will be the foundation of our future.”

What does it mean to be a sage?

A “sage” is defined as a person with profound wisdom. We each might feel that we have some wisdom -- but PROFOUND wisdom? That seems almost impossible in our very complex world.

But I did experience a display of “profound wisdom” last weekend, when I attended the Sage-ing International Conference in Seattle. The vision of this organization is to help elder reclaim their role as leaders, sharing wisdom and spirit essential to creating a better world for current and future generations. WOW! That is a vision that I am thrilled to embrace – and, I now feel fortunate to have witnessed in action.

The theme of “Gifting the World as We Age” was woven through the speakers and the workshops, offering a cornucopia of riches. Many topics focused on “how do we discover our own deep riches to share with others?” I especially appreciated the evocative rituals – allowing us to connect with our individual sense of spirit and weaving us together using music, dancing and prose.

What was most remarkable was the enormous caring and respect that folks shared with each other. Whether it was the conference leaders appreciating each other or the open-hearted welcoming to all the new-comers, of which there were many, everyone was offered the opportunity to be a part of a growing community of concerned, spirited and engaged older folks – sharing the path of becoming and living as elders.

What a glorious way to spend three days! What an opportunity for our culture to include the wisdom that comes with reflection, intention and caring for others, for the world, and for future generations.

Perhaps this is the process of “sage-ing” -- that profound wisdom is much more than what we might intellectually know or say. It is the full opening of the heart when we meet others, the expression of our spirit as we seek to connect well beyond the narrow range of our mundane world, and the expansion of our minds as we learn together.

What a gift sage-ing offers our world!
