What does it mean to be a sage?

A “sage” is defined as a person with profound wisdom. We each might feel that we have some wisdom -- but PROFOUND wisdom? That seems almost impossible in our very complex world.

But I did experience a display of “profound wisdom” last weekend, when I attended the Sage-ing International Conference in Seattle. The vision of this organization is to help elder reclaim their role as leaders, sharing wisdom and spirit essential to creating a better world for current and future generations. WOW! That is a vision that I am thrilled to embrace – and, I now feel fortunate to have witnessed in action.

The theme of “Gifting the World as We Age” was woven through the speakers and the workshops, offering a cornucopia of riches. Many topics focused on “how do we discover our own deep riches to share with others?” I especially appreciated the evocative rituals – allowing us to connect with our individual sense of spirit and weaving us together using music, dancing and prose.

What was most remarkable was the enormous caring and respect that folks shared with each other. Whether it was the conference leaders appreciating each other or the open-hearted welcoming to all the new-comers, of which there were many, everyone was offered the opportunity to be a part of a growing community of concerned, spirited and engaged older folks – sharing the path of becoming and living as elders.

What a glorious way to spend three days! What an opportunity for our culture to include the wisdom that comes with reflection, intention and caring for others, for the world, and for future generations.

Perhaps this is the process of “sage-ing” -- that profound wisdom is much more than what we might intellectually know or say. It is the full opening of the heart when we meet others, the expression of our spirit as we seek to connect well beyond the narrow range of our mundane world, and the expansion of our minds as we learn together.

What a gift sage-ing offers our world!

Thanks for this beautiful description of the Sage-ing conference and for the insights into what it means to become a Sage. I'm sorry I can't join you at the Climate March. I'll be there in spirit.
